ICED COFFEE VS. COLD BREW

Coffee enthusiasts have plenty of options when it comes to their chilled cup of joe, but what’s the difference between cold brew and iced coffee? While both are refreshing ways to enjoy coffee on a warm day, they are prepared very differently—and that difference impacts the flavor, texture, and even the caffeine content.

ICED COFFEE

Iced coffee is a straightforward favorite for many. It’s made by brewing hot coffee and then chilling it, usually by pouring it over ice.

  • How It’s Made: Hot coffee is brewed using your regular method (drip, pour-over, French press) then cooled down. You can brew a strong pot and pour it over ice or let it chill in the fridge before serving.
  • Flavor Profile: Because it’s brewed hot, iced coffee retains the acidity and bright flavors of the coffee beans. It can taste bolder or more bitter than cold brew, but it’s often sweeter and more balanced when served with milk or syrups.
  • Best Time to Make It: Iced coffee is perfect when you want a quick, chilled coffee without waiting for a long steeping process. It’s an excellent way to repurpose leftover hot coffee from your morning brew.

COLD BREW

Cold brew, on the other hand, is all about patience and smoothness. This coffee is brewed slowly over time, using cold water instead of hot.

  • How It’s Made: Coarse coffee grounds are steeped in cold water for an extended period—usually 12 to 24 hours. After steeping, the grounds are filtered out, and the resulting concentrate is either served as is or diluted with water or milk.
  • Flavor Profile: Because cold brew uses cold water and a long brewing process, it produces a coffee that’s much smoother, with lower acidity and a naturally sweeter taste. Cold brew is often described as mellow and full-bodied, making it a favorite for those who prefer less bitterness.
  • Best Time to Make It: If you have time to plan ahead, cold brew is ideal for prepping large batches of coffee that you can enjoy for several days. It’s a slower process but perfect for hot summer days when you want a smooth, chilled drink.
